It is with profound sorrow that we announce that on August 9, 2025, prof. RNDr. Miroslava Vicherková, CSc., a prominent scientific figure of the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University, passed away. She dedicated her entire life to plant physiology.
Prof. Vicherková was born on April 2, 1933, in Holasovice near Opava. After graduating from the Reálné gymnázium in Opava, she began her studies at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University in Brno, specializing in Physiology and Anatomy of Plants, which she completed in 1956. Immediately after graduating, she was hired as an assistant at the Department of Plant Anatomy and Physiology.
In 1968, she successfully defended her candidate’s dissertation on the influence of couch grass on the growth and water regime of flax and sunflower. In 1990, she habilitated with a thesis titled The Effect of Exogenous and Endogenous Factors on the Water Transport of Plants and the Activity of Stomata, which summarized the results of her many years of research. In 1997, she was appointed professor of plant physiology.
Between 1991 and 1994, she was entrusted with leading the Department of Plant Physiology and Anatomy at our faculty. As a university lecturer, she devoted herself for many years to lectures and seminars in cytology, anatomy, and plant physiology, not only for students of biology and biochemistry but also for students of teacher biology programs.
Professor Vicherková was a respected expert whose work significantly advanced the understanding of the complex processes regulating plant water management and who greatly influenced generations of students and colleagues. Her legacy will remain a lasting part of the academic and scientific community of the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University.

The final farewell will take place on August 13, 2025, at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Brno-Husovice.
