Differential Geometry and its Applications 2025: A Prestigious International Conference Returns to Brno

The celebrated conference series Differential Geometry and its Applications (DGA) celebrates more than 40 years of tradition with the 16th edition held at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, from September 7 to 12, 2025. This renowned event gathers leading experts and young scientists to explore the latest advances in geometry and its broad applications across mathematics and physics.

Welcome Party Opens the Conference

The conference kicks off informally on Sunday, September 7, with a Welcome Party. The Welcome Party on Sunday also doubled as a celebration of Jan Slovák’s 65th birthday, honoring not only his role as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Differential Geometry and its Applications but also his lifelong dedication to the academic community. Rector Martin Bareš expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Jan Slovák’s outstanding contributions to the development of Masaryk University and shared how honored he feels to know and work alongside such an inspiring figure in mathematics.

Passing the Torch: A New Chapter for the Journal’s Leadership

After many dedicated years at the helm, Jan Slovák, the esteemed Editor-in-Chief of the journal Differential Geometry and its Applications, will be passing the torch to a new successor, Lorenz Schwachhöfer. His visionary leadership and commitment have greatly shaped the journal’s prestige and impact in the field.

Inside the Journal’s Stats

We look forward to the exciting directions the new Editor-in-Chief, Lorenz Schwachhöfer, will bring, building on Jan Slovák’s remarkable legacy. "As editor-in-chief with 18 years of editorial experience, I have accepted 4,143 manuscripts, rejected 2,726, and 1,264 are still in the editing process,” said Jan Slovák. (You can read the interview with Jan, where he talks about his editorial experience here.)

A Rich History of Hosting Excellence

DGA meetings take place every three years at Czech universities, building a strong tradition in mathematical research and collaboration. Previous editions were hosted in cities including Hradec Králové (2019, 2022), Brno (2010, 2013, 2016), Olomouc (2007), Prague (2004), and Opava (2001). Their rotating nature fosters a vibrant exchange between institutions and participants.

Plenary Lectures and Thematic Sections
The conference programme features a blend of invited plenary lectures and seven specialized sections:

  • Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis
  • Geometric Structures and Representation Theory
  • Geometry and Physics
  • Finsler Geometry
  • Poisson Geometry
  • Quantum Geometry
  • Geometry of Information

Never running more than three parallel sessions, this format encourages broad participation while maintaining depth in specialized topics. Talks and poster presentations by conference participants add to the dynamic scholarly environment.

Public lecture by Jean-Pierre Bourguignon on “Geometry and Physics: a Long History of Mutual Inspiration and Missed Opportunities
The plenary speakers include internationally renowned mathematicians such as Anton Alekseev (University of Geneva), Frédéric Bourgeois (Université Paris-Saclay), Jeffrey Case (Penn State University), and many others from prestigious institutions worldwide.

A highlight of the conference is the public lecture by Jean-Pierre Bourguigno, the former ERC president, on “Geometry and Physics: a Long History of Mutual Inspiration and Missed Opportunities” scheduled for Thursday, September 11, at 17:00.

Conference Governance and Organization
The Programme Committee, chaired by Lorenz Schwachhöfer, brings together experts responsible for curating the high-quality scientific content.

The Local Organizing Committee, led by Josef Šilhan, Katharina Neusser, Martina Kolníková, and Jan Vondra, ensures smooth logistics and a welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.

Future Prospects

The DGA 2025 conference exemplifies Masaryk University’s commitment to fostering STEM disciplines and inspiring future generations to commitment to join the current boost of direct applications of geometric approach in areas like deep learning, quantum computing, allowing groundbreaking novel concepts related to AI. The three relevant sections of DGA, Poisson Geometry, Quantum Geometry, and Geometry of Information, reflect also the deep involvement of Jan Slovak's team in related Horizon 2020 projects CALIGOLA and CaLiForNIA
